32. What is the Cancun update?

Ethereum, the world’s second-largest cryptocurrency, is constantly evolving. In March 2024, it rolled out one of its most significant upgrades yet — Cancun (officially: Cancun-Deneb). This update could completely transform the way we use Ethereum.

Sounds technical? Don’t worry — we’ll break it all down clearly.

What is “Cancun”?

“Cancun” is the name given to the part of the Ethereum upgrade focused on the execution layer (where transactions are processed). It was deployed alongside another upgrade called “Deneb,” which targeted the consensus layer (how the network agrees on data). Together, they’re referred to as the Cancun-Deneb upgrade or just Dencun.

Here’s why it matters:

  • It significantly reduces transaction costs.

  • It improves Ethereum’s scalability.

  • It sets the stage for mass adoption of “rollup” technologies.

What are rollups and why are they important?

Rollups are a solution that lets Ethereum process transactions off-chain — outside the main Ethereum network — and then bring a summary of them back onto the blockchain.

This means:

  • Less congestion on the network,

  • Lower transaction fees,

  • Faster and more eco-friendly operation.

Rollups are crucial if Ethereum is to support millions of daily users — for example in gaming, Web3 apps, or microtransactions.

The core of Cancun: EIP-4844 and proto-danksharding

The headline feature of Cancun is EIP-4844, which introduces something called proto-danksharding. The name is complex, but the idea is simple:

It’s a new, temporary way of storing rollup data that is:

  • Cheaper,

  • Faster,

  • More efficient.

Instead of permanently recording every bit of data on the Ethereum blockchain (which is expensive), proto-danksharding stores data in temporary containers called blobs.

The result? Rollups become up to 10 times cheaper to use.

What does this mean for everyday users?

If you use Ethereum-based apps — like crypto wallets, decentralized exchanges (DEXs), Web3 games, or NFT platforms — you’ll notice:

  • Lower transaction fees,

  • Faster processing times,

  • A smoother user experience (even if the technical changes happen behind the scenes).

Dencun is like upgrading your phone’s software: it looks the same, but works better and faster.

What else did the Cancun upgrade change?

  • Improved security — through updates to validator mechanics.

  • Greater scalability in the future — laying the foundation for full Ethereum sharding.

  • Better energy efficiency — thanks to improved off-chain data handling.

Summary

The Cancun upgrade marks a major leap forward for Ethereum. It prepares the network for faster, cheaper, and more scalable usage — just in time for the next wave of Web3 adoption.

If you want to understand the future of Ethereum, Cancun is a great place to start.
